According to the latest news, video and screen sharing might come soon to Telegram group voice chats. Reports suggest that Telegram’s new group voice chats feature is similar to Discord room.
These days, voice chats are part of existing text chats and operate as a persistent way to speak live with friends and family. Since they are always available, you will be able to dip in and out of voice chats just like you would in a Discord room.
Telegram is supporting “a few thousand participants”. The feature will appear at the top of an existing group chat. If it is enabled, anyone will be able to join the conversation freely. Interestingly, users will be able to use a push to talk key for voice chats to control microphone input on the desktop versions of Telegram for Windows and Mac.
The company has also built a useful voice chat overlay for Android that operates as a system-wide floating widget and lets you see who is talking. With this, you will also be able to operate your microphone and mute chats when the Telegram app is running in the background.
As of now, the group voice chats is focused on audio, but Telegram says it is going to add video and screen sharing features within a few weeks. Note that if you are interested in trying out group voice chats then you have to be an admin of a group. If you are an admin, you can enable the feature from the group settings menu.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has revealed that Telegram now has around 500 million users. Durov described the platform as “one that is user-friendly, respects the privacy, and allows us to cover the costs of servers and traffic.” Notably, the company is thinking about monetizing its service with an ad platform that is designed for one to many public channels.
