For a long time, Spotify has been allowing to log in through Facebook. According to the latest news, recently, it has also started allowing login through Apple ID on Apple devices. In the context of this, as per the latest development, the company is looking forward to adding the option of a Google account as a new sign-in method.
However, this new integration of Spotify and Google account seems to be limited for now because, in a support article, Spotify has clearly mentioned that existing users would not be able to connect their existing Spotify account with Google account.
In simple words, if your Spotify email address is the same as your Google email address then you will have to use the email-based sign-in option. This means if you are an existing Spotify user then you will end up creating a new Spotify account if you go with the ‘Continue with Google’ option.
Though this is not a great thing for existing users of Spotify, this will be very convenient for new users. New users will be able to easily use Spotify with their Google account without much hassle. For new users, another advantage of using a Google account for signing up for Spotify is the two-factor authentication with Google Authenticator. It is a crucial security feature that Spotify natively lacks since incorporation.
Note that Spotify’s Google account integration comes at a time when Google has started shutting down its Google Play Music application. It has already been shut for a wide range of users and for the rest, it will eventually shut down sometimes soon. From the perspective of Spotify, it can be considered as a very timely step because the company might be able to make it easier for users who are looking forward to some Google Play Music alternatives. This way, a good number of Google Play Music users will shift directly into Spotify.
9to5Google reported that now, this feature is already live on Android and the web. The last time, we checked this in India, we have seen the ‘Continue with Google’ button was not present on Android but it was present on the web. As soon as Spotify rolls out its new login method this will change.
