For a while, it has been rumored that Samsung and AMD are working together to develop a custom GPU for the former’s chips but so far, neither of the companies have announced any news officially. Now, a new rumor has surfaced that conveys that this custom chip might be launched very soon.
SamMobile reported the new rumor has seemingly revived hope for an upcoming launch of the custom chip with an AMD GPU. According to popular tipster Ice Universe, the South Korean tech giant is apparently planning to showcase the custom GPU developed with AMD in June 2021. He also hinted that the company will be revealing the technical details and specifications of the new chip around this time.
Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) tweeted “Samsung is tentatively scheduled to release Samsung × AMD GPU in June to showcase new technologies and specifications, but only to release GPU, the processor needs to wait.”
Previously it was rumored that Samsung might be unveiling its new Exynos chipsets with the new AMD GPUs sometime in the second or third quarter of this year. So it seems the new rumor is in line with the previous one. Although, which series the new chips will arrive in is currently unknown. It could be for the Samsung Galaxy Note 21 series or for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. It is worth mention that some rumors have also pointed towards a 2022 launch with the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup.
Recently, a graphics benchmark of a supposed Exynos chipset with the new AMD GPU has seemingly beaten Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset. If this is true, it might give us an idea as to what we could expect from the new custom chips but frankly, it is still too early to know. We will follow up the story with additional information as soon as something pops so stay tuned.
