OnePlus unveils OnePlus 8T concept phone with a color changing rear and breathing monitor

Earlier this year, Oneplus showed off its first concept phone at CES 2020. The OnePlus Concept One which was made in partnership with McLaren came with an electro chromic glass to hide the camera when not in use. After this, the company has continued its experiments with electro chromic glass and the result is an OnePlus 8T concept phone.

The official press release of OnePlus 8T concept phone reads “OnePlus team is building further on our first concept technology to unlock even more potential benefit for future smartphone users”. In this device, instead of just the camera glass, OnePlus has expanded the electro chromic glass technology to the entire back.

A wavy pattern backed by a color-changing film containing a metal oxide with the valence state of the metal ions varying based on the voltage covers the entire rear panel. In simple words, the pattern changes color from a dark blue shade to light silver as soon as the metal oxide activates. This is called ECMF (Electronic Color, Material & Finish).

It seems OnePlus aims to amalgamate art and technology into its products. The color changing back panel of the OnePlus 8T Concept Phone has been inspired by “the multi-hued flowing water in the hot springs of Pamukkale, Turkey.” Note that it would merely be a fancy color changing pattern had it not been the mmWave based reactive sensing technology. The rectangular rear camera system comes with a mmWave radar module which transmits and receives electromagnetic waves. These received signals are processed by the CPU and DSP enables the OnePlus 8T concept phone to “perceive, image, locate, and track objects”.

The rear panel flashes blue and silver when you receive a call as the mmWave module enables gestures. In order to reject a call, all you have to do is simply wave a hand over the camera module.

The company has integrated another feature with which you will be able to turn this concept phone into a breathing monitor. All you have to do is stand behind the phone and the mmWave module will record your breathing. You will be able to check results real time, on the screen of your device. Here, the color changing rear serves as a biofeedback device.

OnePlus 8T Concept has been developed by the newly formed OnePlus Gaudí team which has 39 designers based out of Shenzhen, Taipei, New York, and India.
