Microsoft announces HoloLens 2 with Better Display at MWC 2019

Microsoft has just made their first announcement at the MWC 2019. This announcement is regarding the HoloLens from the company. Microsoft has released the second generation of the HoloLens, named HoloLens 2. HoloLens is a mixed reality handset by Microsoft similar to HTC’s Vive. As HoloLens 2 is a second iteration from Microsoft, it brings several improvements over the original one. To begin with, HoloLens 2 comes with a much better display than its predecessor. This is really helpful in watching mixed reality content.

Apart from that, HoloLens 2 has some design changes too which make it much more comfortable to wear than before. Microsoft has also updated the gesture controls of the HoloLens 2 than before. The company also claims that HoloLens comes with improved performance and higher power efficiency. HoloLens 2 comes with a 52-degree field-of-sight while it still has a holographic density of 47 pixels-per-degree of sight.

With HoloLens 2, Microsoft has integrated what is called¬†microelectromechanical system. Also known as MEMS, this system is equivalent to a 2K display for each eye. When combined, this system should give you a feeling of 4K display on the HoloLens 2. The HoloLens 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 compute platform. There is also a custom Holographic processing unit built into the HoloLens 2.

Regarding the Audio I/O, there is a 5-channel microphone array and built-in spatial audio hardware. HoloLens 2 also bundles an Iris scanner which goes through the security check when users are wearing the headset. Therefore, the security process is complete as soon as the headset is worn and it is ready to use. HoloLens 2 comes with a USB Type-C port for charging and we also have an 8MP camera for video conferencing.

The disappointing part, however, is the steep price of HoloLens 2.  The HoloLens 2 is priced at $3,500 (around Rs. 2,49,000) and is now available for buyers in United States, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Australia, and New Zealand from the official Microsoft e-shop
