Xiaomi finally teased something today that could be groundbreaking and could be a beginning to a new tech era. Xiaomi, on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo, teased a new tech called Mi Air Charge by uploading a video teaser. According to Xiaomi, this tech can charge devices over-the-air without connecting any wires.
The remote charging tech can charge multiple devices at the same time without any connecting wires or magnetic tapes. Currently, the wireless charging tech isn’t wireless at all, we have to keep our smartphones (or smart devices) on the charging pad to charge the device. But the Xiaomi explained in the teaser, the device can start charging automatically, when it comes in the range of the Mi Air Charger. You don’t have to keep the device on any pad or connect any wire to the device, etc., complete wireless. It is like the Wi-Fi tech, when you come in the range, you can use it.
We're excited to bring you the remote charging technology – Mi Air Charge Technology! Charge multiple devices simultaneously while you're gaming, walking around or even when something's in the way, no strings attached. Xiaomi in the blog post said, “the core technology of Xiaomi’s remote charging lies in space positioning and energy transmission. Xiaomi’s self-developed isolated charging pile has five phase interference antennas built-in, which can accurately detect the location of the smartphone. A phase control array composed of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.”
This kind of remote charging has been overvalued for years now, but no company has ever successfully commercialized it. Xiaomi is not any stranger to charging innovation, having introduced 80W wireless charging and 120W wired charging, but its previous advancements were more incremental instead of revolutionary. According to the blog post, the tech can now charge multiple devices at the same time at 5-watt output per device.
Speaking of the devices, you might have the question that which devices can be charged via this tech? Do we need any special tech within the smartphone to get it working? Well, obviously yes, Xiaomi said they already developed the tech, they are calling it “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”. There will be a set of 14 antennas, that will ultimately be used to convert the wave signal to electrical energy via a rectifier circuit.
It is reported that Xiaomi’s self-developed Air Charge technology also can charge smartwatches, bracelets, and other wearable devices. In the near future, the front room, including speakers, desk lamps, and other small smart home products, can realize wireless power supply design, completely get obviate the shackles of wires, and truly realize wireless front room. More importantly, the mobile is often charged wirelessly at an extended distance, regardless of within the hand or pocket, without cable or base. Charging while playing, multiple devices charging at an equivalent time, albeit it’s blocked by objects.
It's a tech demo, we won't be rolling out this tech to consumer products this year

But again it is just a tech demo, we can’t expect the consumer product in this year at least. Even a Xiaomi PR Spokesperson also confirmed that “It’s a tech demo, we won’t be rolling out this tech to consumer products this year“. Nonetheless, we have been waiting for this for a long time, and now it is finally happening, so why not wait another year, at least we have some hope, it is under development, and can expect soon.
