According to the latest news, Google has officially announced a new Pixel phone dubbed Pixel 5A 5G. Interestingly, this time also, Google announced the device in the same way it has announced a lot of recent Pixel phones, by reacting to a rumor. However, this time, the rumor was so serious that Google had to take an action. It was rumored that Pixel 5A 5G has been canceled entirely.

It is worth mention that Google has a history of announcing handsets in response to rumors. For example, in 2019, Google tweeted out an image of the Pixel 4 after rumors started circulating about the device. This is an innovative way to take control of the rumor hype cycle. However, as discussed earlier, this time’s announcement is less cheeky because this time, Google had no other options to control damage apart from denying cancellation rumors right away.

Addressing the so-called rumor, a Google spokesperson gave the following statement: “Pixel 5a 5G is not canceled. It will be available later this year in the U.S. and Japan and announced in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced.”

Android Central referred to two independent sources that claim Pixel 5A had been canceled. A tweet from Jon Prosser puts forward chip shortage as the reason behind the cancellation. Considering Google’s statement after these rumors it seems, chip shortages are real because currently, Google is only planning to release Pixel 5A 5G in the US and in Japan.

Pixel 5A 5G is rumored to be more or less similar to Pixel 4A 5G. Pixel 4A 5G was a low-end phone specially designed by Google to broaden its market reach at affordable prices. Last year, in July, code pointing to the existence of the Pixel 5A has was spotted on the Android Open Source Project. Like Pixel 4A 5G, the Pixel 5A 5G is expected to come with a 6.2 inches FHD+ display, dual rear cameras, and a headphone jack.

Google’s statement claims Pixel 5A 5G will be announced “in line with when last year’s a-series phone was introduced”. Pixel 4A 5G was announced back in August 2020. Recently, many analysts speculated that Pixel 5A 5G would be announced at this year’s online-only Google I/O developer conference along with a lower-end version of the Pixel Buds.

According to some rumors, Google is creating a higher-end flagship Pixel phone which might come later this year. This higher-end flagship Pixel device is expected to be Pixel 6. It is being said that this handset will use Google-designed chips and a “Whitechapel” system on the chip.
