Last year in August, Google announced two mid-range budget-friendly Pixel smartphones, the Google Pixel 4a, and its 5G variant. Google has been following this trend from the third-gen Pixel smartphones, i.e., Pixel 3 series, Google tends to launch the mid-range (budget-friendly) Pixel as well, along with its top-tiered Pixel. And from recent reports, it is confirmed that Google is again working on the mid-range version of it Pixel 5, i.e., Google Pixel 5a.
A few renders of the new Google Pixel 5a have been leaked by Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks). The renders provided us the first look at the upcoming smartphone. And frankly speaking, it seems like Google just copy-pasted the design of last year’s Pixel 4a 5G. I mean literally no changes at all. Even the dimensions are almost similar, the Pixel 4a 5G has a dimension of 153.9 x 74 x 8.5 mm, and the projected dimension of the new Pixel 5a is 156.2 x 73.2 x 8.8mm. And again, the Pixel 5a is retaining the unibody design of its predecessors.
Now, let’s talk about other known specifications of the Google Pixel 5a. The smartphone is going to feature a 6.2-inch Full-HD+ OLED panel with a small punch hole housing for the selfie camera, with thin bezels and forehead but a more significant chin. Right now, the refresh rate, screen to body ratio, the screen resolution is still unknown, but it will be revealed soon. As we can see the small hole at the rear portion of the smartphone, which ought to be the fingerprint sensor, again implies that Google isn’t going to implement the under-display fingerprint sensor this time too, maybe in the sixth-gen Pixel, but surely not in the Pixel 5a.
The design is again retaining in the previous form-factor of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. The volume rockers and the power button is located on the top-right side of the smartphone as always, and the good-looking paint job on the sleep/wake button. The Google Assistant button is missing, which we loved the most, but Google already removed it from the Pixel, so there is no point of discussion here. The color options are yet not revealed but we can see the matte black color variant.
Now, speaking of connectivity, Google is again retaining the 3.5-mm headphone which is a good thing, located at the top portion of the smartphone, the Type-C port is located at the bottom as always, the dual-speakers are located at the bottom and in the front earpiece. Google might equip the Pixel 5a with 5G connectivity options but again that is what we are predicting.
So, looking at these renders, we can say that there isn’t anything new to look at, we already have seen these things in the previous-gen Pixel smartphones. We are expecting that Google does something magical in the other hardware section, like the SoC, camera(s), battery, etc. so that we can buy the new Pixel 5a with some new specs, otherwise, it will be like buying the 2021 edition of Pixel 4a 5G or the rebranded version of Pixel 4a 5G.
