In its much-anticipated hardware event, Apple unveiled four new iPhones: iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. All the four devices are powered by the world’s first 5 nm A14 Bionic chipset. All the devices come with 5G support.
All the four iPhone 12 series devices come with Super Retina XDR (OLED) panels. Apple has partnered with Corning in order to offer a new glass and ceramic protective layer called Ceramic Shield. The front panel is covered with this Ceramic Shield.
iPhone 12 Mini comes with a 5.4 inches display, while iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro come with a 6.1 inches display. iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a 6.7 inches display. iPhone 12 and 12 mini comes in an aluminum frame which makes it look similar to the older generation iPhone models. On the other hand, the Pro variants come with a stainless steel frame. All the models are IP68 rated for water and dust resistance.
The entire iPhone 12 lineup is powered by the latest A14 Bionic chipset under the hood. It must be noted that the A14 chip made its debut earlier this month with the new iPad Air. Apple claims this chip to be the world’s first chipset to be based on the 5 nm process. This chipset packs a hexa core CPU, a quad core GPU, and a 16 core Neural Engine that boasts up to 11 Trillion Operations per second (TOPs). As far as connectivity is concerned, all the four variants of the iPhone 12 support Gigabit LTE and 5G connectivity.
The iPhone 12 and 12 mini comes in storage options starting from 64 GB and up to 256 GB. There is also an option of 128 GB. The Pro variants start from 128 GB and up to 512 GB. There is also a provision of 256 GB.
All of the iPhone 12 models are backed by the recently launched iOS 14 which brings an App Library, widgets support, a new Siri interface, picture in picture, and App Clips. Apart from these, it also displays when apps access the camera, clipboard, or the microphone.
Like its predecessors, the standard iPhone models come with a square dual camera setup on the rear, while the Pro variants come with a quad camera array inside the square cut out. iPhone 12 and 12 mini have a dual-camera system with a 12 MP (f/1.6) primary camera and a 12 MP (f/2.4) ultra-wide lens with a 120 degree FOV that supports OIS, Smart HDR 3, 4K @ 60 FPS video recording and 5x digital zoom.
The company has integrated new features in the camera such as Night Mode Time Lapse, Night Mode Selfies, HDR video recording, and much more.
Apple is doubling down on optical zoom and LiDAR sensor with iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max for augmented reality applications. In the Pro variants, Apple is offering a 12 MP (f/1.6) primary camera, a 12 MP ultra wide lens with a 120 degree FOV, and a 12 MP telephoto camera. The iPhone 12 Pro supports 4x optical zoom while the iPhone 12 Pro Max supports 5x optical zoom. Both the devices support dual OIS, sapphire lens cover, Deep Fusion, and a new Apple ProRAW feature that lets users click and edit RAW images.
Interestingly, years ago, MagSafe has phased out of MacBooks but Apple has decided to revive the popular moniker for a new magnetic wireless charging solution for this iPhone 12 series.
Last but not the least, Apple has decided to reject the charging adapter from the iPhone 12 retail box in order to reach the company’s environmental goals. Apple will now offer a USB Type C cable to charge iPhone 12.
