Just a few hours back, Nikkei reported, that Apple will start mass production of the iPhone 12 from later this month and within a handful of hours, today itself, Apple announced a virtual announcement event for iPhone 12. The scheduled date of the event is on 15th September 2020. The event will be live streamed across Apple’s website, in the Apple TV app, and on YouTube so interested people can start following these. The event is scheduled at 10 AM. Unlike most iPhone event announcements, this time, there will be taglines this year. It is possible that Apple has some sort of surprises in store. As of now, it is confirmed that Apple will unveil the four iPhone 12 devices and Apple Watch Series 6.
According to the report, at least one of the four 5G enabled iPhone 12 models will ramp production from mid of September, and production lines for the entire lineup will start between the end of this month and the first weeks of October. Normally, Apple starts its production in the month of August every year. This time, the whole process is late for the coronavirus issue.
A few days back, the company’s CFO has already told the world that this time, its handset will launch a few weeks later than usual. It suggested an October release. Nikkei reported that Apple’s long-rumored competitor to Tile trackers, dubbed Apple AirTags, is at the mass production stage.
The model that will go into mass production first is the 6.1 inches OLED model. It will come with two rear cameras. The other three iPhone 12 models, i.e. the 5.4 inches OLED model, the 6.1 inches OLED model with triple rear camera setup and LiDAR scanner, and the new flagship 6.7 inches model with the 3D scanner will go into mass production only after the 6.1 inches model. It must be noted that a report has suggested that only the higher-end phones will come with mmWave support. mmWave is the fastest 5G spectrum.
All four iPhone 12’s will sport a new industrial design with flattened square sides. According to Nikkei, Apple’s strict product secrecy requirements faced a particular challenge this year as iPhone 12 prototypes needed to be shipped in special trucks from China to California for verification. The report conveys that the company targeted as many as 80 million 5G iPhone units for 2020, but due to production delays, it could be somewhere around the 73 million range. On contrary to this report, Apple’s iPad sales increased this year even in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic because more people started working from home.
AirTags are expected to make their debut alongside iPhone 12. AirTags will use ultra-wideband technology to allow the phone to accurately determine the location of their laptop. It will take care so that the laptop is not lost.
In the weekend, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman tweeted that Apple is likely to announce the event date for the iPhone 12 announcement this week while well-known YouTuber and tech leaker Jon Prosser believes that Apple will unveil a new iPad Air and the Apple Watch Series 6 on the same day.
