Apple has officially canceled the AirPower wireless charging mat

Apple just released its latest AirPods which come with updated chip inside it. This can also be called the AirPods 2 but Apple just calls it the new AirPods. Now, it is also understandable from Apple because there are just minor changes from AirPods 1 to AirPods 2.

However, Apple’ AirPods 2 boxes came with disclaimer that the AirPower wireless charging mat is supported. This is because the AirPods 2 come with a wireless charging case. And so we can charge the latest AirPods with any Qi wireless charging pad.

Now, if you remember the AirPower charging pad from Apple, it was announced in late 2017 to be available the year after that. But we did not see any signs of it releasing in the whole of 2018. Now that we are in March 2019 and the AirPods 2 show a reference of AirPower, Apple has clarified that AirPower project is cancelled. This means there will not be any wireless charging pad for Apple products made by Apple this year.

Here is the official response from Apple on AirPower’s cancellation:

After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward,

This statement was given by Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in an email to TechCrunch. This indicates that after keeping its customers waiting for a year and a half, Apple has cancelled this much-anticipated project.

Looking at the statement, the “high standards” reference on the overheating issue of AirPower mat. Apple could not find a way to improve the thermals on this charging mat and they finally had to cancel it. Apparently, Apple’s AirPower wireless mat was supposed to have more than 20 charging coils inside it to facilitate wireless charging.
