After the outbreak of this coronavirus pandemic, we have seen a huge increase in the adoption rate of contactless services starting from contactless banking and payments to contactless food delivery and grocery delivery. Major companies like Amazon are working on other advanced contactless technologies. Some of these technologies let customers use their palm as their IDs.
Now, according to the latest news, a designer based in France has developed a new ring. This ring lets users perform several contactless tasks using near field communication (NFC). The ring is dubbed as the Aeklys.
Aeklys smart ring allows users to make seamless and contactless payments in places where there are NFC payment systems. This means this Aeklys smart ring can store all your credit and debit card information for you to make contactless payments without using any of your biometric data. Considering the security risk of personal data in today’s digital world, this is wonderful.
This card can also unlock your car apart from storing your card information. However, that is possible only if you have a digital car key. Similarly, it can also open the door of your home but it can do so only if you have NFC enabled smart lock systems. In simple words, anything and everything with an NFC support will seamlessly work with the “Aeklys” smart ring.
The name of the French designer is Philippe Starck. He developed it under the tech startup, iCare Technologies which is based in the French region of Corsica. As per the developers, at launch, the Aeklys smart ring will enable just five contactless functions which are,
- Bank payments
- Public transport.
- Digital business card.
- Computer ID.
- Private concierge service
Both Starck and iCare have said that they will add a bunch of new functionality to the ring in the near future. Starck said this smart ring “connects you to your environment like magic”. The developer and the designer of the ring want you to use the ring as a key part of your digital ecosystem. It seems that Aeklys has the potential to become an all in one ID device for users around the world if Starck and iCare keep on pushing their limits.
Aeklys ring can be found on iCare’s official website. It comes with a price tag of US $ 300 (which is INR 22,032) per piece.
