Even though 5G smartphones are becoming common these days, still, most affordable 5G handsets arrive in the mid range segments. However, this might change because as per the latest news, Qualcomm is planning to announce its Snapdragon 480 5G chipset on 4th January 2020. The chipset will bring faster bandwidth to more affordable devices.
Well known tipster Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings), tweeted that Qualcomm is going to unveil the Snapdragon 480 5G processor today. The new chip is based on an 8nm process and it comes with Kyro 460 octa cores clocked up to 2 GHz. The tweet reveals that the new chipset offers a 100 percent improvement in terms of performance over its previous generation.
According to the tipster, the new chipset will support up to 120 Hz refresh rate displays which suggest it will soon feature in many affordable handsets. The post also mentioned that the new chip will also support Wi-Fi 6 standards.
Mukul Sharma posted “[Exclusive] In all likelihood, Qualcomm will unveil its Snapdragon 480 5G processor today. 8nm octa-core Kryo 460, up to 2GHz 100% improvement over Snapdragon 460 Adreno 619 Support for up to 120Hz displays Wi-Fi 6 ready Feel free to retweet. #snapdragon #Snapdragon480 #5G”
If all this turns out to be true, then we can expect to see a shift in the affordable smartphone segments with more OEMs offering 5G networking in cheap handsets.
Unfortunately, the report is still unconfirmed and so far the company made no noise about any chipset launch today. StuffListings leaks have been accurate in the past so we may eventually see Qualcomm unveiling Snapdragon 480 chipset in the coming days.
